NORWALK, Conn. – A snow emergency will be in effect for the city as on 10 p.m. Sunday and a National Weather Service winter storm warning is in effect.

Current forecasts still vary considerably, but the NWS is calling for the possibility of 6 to 10 inches of snow, and perhaps a tenth to a quarter-inch of ice.

Snow will begin in the early morning hours and continue through the day, the NWS said. This weather will have a major impact on the morning commute and a minor/moderate impact on the evening commute.

Public Works crews will begin pre-treating city roads today  in advance of the snow, according to a city press release. Norwalk officials are watching the line of sleet/ freezing rain that could have a significant impact on travel and power outages.

In addition to this storm, the National Weather Service is forecasting dangerously cold temperatures on Monday night. Lows from 5 to -5 degrees, with wind chills from -15 to -20, are expected.

In the event of an emergency, call 911. As with every emergency, the city’s fire, police and EMS work closely with DPW and utility crews to ensure safe operations. Residents who experience power outages should contact their power company to report it. Do not assume they are aware of the outage or that someone else has called it in.

Residents should limit driving during this storm and make sure vehicles are free of snow and ice before driving. In order to allow Public Works to plow, move vehicles off the street. Vehicles parked on streets marked as snow emergency routes may be ticketed and towed.

For questions or concerns about snow operations, contact the city’s Customer Service number at 203-854-3200.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy also has directed the activation of the state’s Emergency Operations Center at 4 a.m. Monday to monitor conditions across the state and quickly coordinate any assistance that may be necessary.

In addition, the governor has ordered a delayed opening for state offices on Monday, and is directing nonessential state employees to report to work at 10 a.m.
