Comment policy update: Let’s keep it civil

Time to clean up the comments. (Dollar Photo Club)

Dear readers:

This comment policy has been amended numerous times since we began in October 2012. We have tweaked it and added to it as commenters have continued to push the boundaries of civility and good taste – and, frankly, libel and slander.

Our goal is to provide a forum for information and a healthy exchange of ideas – constructive, informative, entertaining or all of the above. We pride ourselves in providing an online venue where intelligent, mature people can debate, suggest, converse and exchange ideas without wading through the muck found on many sites.

Because, as we enter campaign season, we are seeing an increase in slime showing up in the comments, we are redefining and tightening our policy and lowering our tolerance level.

We encourage:

  • Adding information to the post. If you know something we don’t, please do share it!
  • Updates. We don’t live in a static world. Updating info helps everyone.
  • Opinions: Like, say, noses, everyone has one. Feel free to share yours, but please be respectful.

In a perfect world, the next set of items would not be necessary. Unfortunately, not everyone can play nice with others:

  • This is something every child in the U.S. is being taught: Do not insult, bully, threaten or harass the writers or your fellow commenters. Continued violators will be banned.
  • Offensive, inappropriate or annoying comments – basically, being a troll – may be deleted or subjected to distempering. Trolls will be banned.
  • Character assassination by innuendo will not be tolerated and will result in a loss of comment privileges.
  • Parenting, physical characteristics, children, marital relationships, interpersonal relationships — other than as they pertain to official duties or documented, proven illegalities — are not public business and will not be allowed and will result in a loss of comment privileges.
  • Spam once, you are gone. This means junk comments, promotional copies or attachments.
  • Sock puppets – alias accounts created by previously banned commenters or by commenters who are seeking third-party approval the easy way – will be banned.
  • Racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, homophobic or otherwise offensive comments will be deleted. Continued violators will be banned.
  • Creativity is a wonderful thing, but finding creative ways to try to avoid getting flagged for policy violations is not cool. Comments will be deleted.
  • Please don’t include e-mail addresses, physical addresses, or phone numbers in your comments for the purpose of self-promotion, or for the purpose of harassing or publicly exposing the private data of others. Such comments will be redacted or removed.
  • The game of trying to guess – or making assertions – about the identities of posters using screen names has gotten old and annoying, and it is most often wrong or unverifiable. Further, it is harmful to the discourse, and potentially libelous. We will no longer allow it. Comments that try to “out” another commenter will be disallowed, and the commenter will be placed on moderation.
  • Language, folks. Keep it clean. People of all ages and sensitivities read this news site, and many are offended or should not be exposed to foul, vulgar or crass language.

We make mistakes. We want to fix them.

  • We welcome alerts about typos, incorrect names, factual errors, and the like.
  • We generally do not correct quoted text.
  • Allegations of factual errors will be corrected at the editor’s discretion if verifiable documentation is available.
  • Requests for credit or attribution may be honored at the editor’s discretion if verifiable documentation is submitted.

Send an email to News@NancyOnNorwalk.com if you think a comment is offensive or breaks the above rules.

We reserve the right to modify the rules. Continual violators will be banned from commenting.

Comments represent the opinion of the commenter and the commenter alone. NancyOnNorwalk and Chapman Hyperlocal Media Inc. take no responsibility for opinions or the veracity of statements made by commenters on this website.

    You forgot:

No hitting below the belt, hair pulling, eye scratching, biting or spiting….

    Other than that I think you’ve covered everything…. 🙂

I’m onboard. The hardest thingg to do is to not allow yourself to be baited into violating the policies. The biggest rule to remember is that we have to agree to disagree sometimes. Both sides of an arguement can feel so strongly that they will never see the other side. I’ve been guilty a time or two. What’s that popular song from that Disney movie……….

  3. I’m offended!

I’m offended by this story! Nancy to be banned immediately! 😉

Was wondering if the Chapman editorial board was concerned about character assassination hurled at Messrs Green, Santo, McCarthy, Moccia and Ms Wilson -that by the way was enthusiastically enabled by NoN?

    1. Mark Chapman

      @Tiger

There has been no character assassination. There has been reporting and comments on facets of job performance and behavior. You should see what we did not allow to get online having to do with personal lives of at least one of the above. If your intent here is to troll, I suggest it will be yet another short stay for you.

  5. tigertime

Not trolling. Just asking you to justify your unbridaled consent to Mr Mushak’s serial character assassinations of the aforementioned. Hope that your new policy remediates your bias. Then maybe the objects of your derision might see fit to contribute to your cause.

    1. Mark Chapman

      @Tigger

There is no bias. We report the news. Mr. Mushak, as a former zoning commissioner, made his allegations in public meetings, on the record, and repeats them in our comments, and offers backup. We have tried to get Mr. Greene to discuss the allegations and tell his side of the story but he does not respond. We would ask where your indignation is at our reporting on David Watts and the NEON leadership, or your reaction to the torrent of “serial character assassination” leveled by commenters on this site at the Mosbys. Unlike some media, we don’t think about who will donate or subscribe or advertise when we report the news. Unfortunately, too many of our readers don’t think about paying for the news they read, preferring, as it were, to let others pick up the check.

Oy vey. Was thinking you might nail your new 15 or so theses on the door of the church of the Mushak protesting that your indulgences are not for sale at fat cat pie. Reformation? What Reformation?

  7. Mike Mushak

@tigertime, your accusation is absurd and not based on reality, and cpmpletely unfair to NON. I have had my comments edited many times. . I always based all my comments on facts, and my facts are rarely if ever disputed.

I could go on and on about almost all of the people you mention, who all have serious violations of the public trust that have been exposed here. For starters, campaign flyers full of lies entered as evidence against the city in a lawsuit (McCarthy and Wilson, which even included an accusation against Mayor Rilling for a vote he took that Ms Wilson also voted for!), chronic and obsessive bullying and threatening of other commissioners (Santo), and numerous violations of the public trust (Greene).

As far as Moccia goes, I love the guy!

I self censor my comments religiously. I have saved Mark hundreds of hours of comment editing time.

    It helps to be old.

@Gordon … Agree but prefer “seasoned veteran.” 😉

Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes.

Most of us have seen and/or been targeted by some of the dreck that appears in discussions in THAT OTHER PUBLICATION. I, personally have been weak enough to respond to at least one truly nasty exchange that appeared in that publication a year or two ago.

My respect and gratitude to N.O.N. for not allowing it on their site.

Might be interesting to see if a subscriber requirement reduces the surprising quantity of objectionable comments. Or subscription fees based on number and length of comments submitted. Judging from comments on NON many readers have serious issues with our local governance. Or it may be that those satisfied remain quiet and above the fray. Some elected officials have privately opinioned they do not read NON owing to the negativity often displayed and political favoritism inherent in many comments. The reluctance of most City officials to respond to NON comments may suggest the choir of the disenchanted may be speaking to itself. Presumably one of the goals of an open press is to encourage communication with elected officials. Perhaps there are opportunities to solicit OpEds from our elected officials on specific topics. One or two sentence comments isn’t likely to get their attention. In many respects the detailed reporting of public meetings is the most important contribution of NON and that in and of itself suggests a subscription fee may be warranted.

“subscription fees based on number and length of comments submitted.” Well we all know who will be paying the most. Don’t we? Kinda goes against the mission of reporting the peoples business to the people and encouraging rational and reasonable discussions, when only those that can afford a subscription can get access to what their government is doing or participate, its no longer a public service but a private club, is it not? Disappointing the lack of class and maturity often displayed in comments. Needlessly increases Mark’s workload which means he has less time doing the actual researching, reporting and editing. Please excuse us all, Mark and Nancy, we get kinda passionate on some things and loose sight of the big picture. Right peeps? Thanks for keeping us all in check, focused and well informed. Lets all raise the bar for ourselves, shall we? Can we cut Mark some slack, so he can do is thing and not waste all his time babysitting us. @Trig, don’t think trying to bribe Mark will work. It’s some old school thing some of us have engrained in our souls that used to be called ethics and pride in ourselves and our work. Yes, some of us still do play, by the old school book. That’s what makes NoN a rare jewel, in this sea of well, agendas, shall we say.

  14. Since this site is run on WordPress I suggest a simple method to avoid anonymous comments and other nonsense. Require commenters to sign in using a WordPress profile. It’s easy, free, and enforces accountability.
