‘Evolving Icon’ exhibition at Lockwood-Mathews Mansion reimagines historic figures through portraiture

NORWALK, Conn. — Exquisitely painted portraits of icons including Sophia Loren, Carmen Miranda, Martin Luther King Jr., and more, all reimagined through a modern lens, will be unveiled at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum (LMMM) in October.

In collaboration with The Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, the “Evolving Icon” exhibition opens to the public on Oct. 7, 2026, at noon, and will run through Jan. 3, 2027.

In a press release, LMMM Trustee and Art Committee Chair Gail Ingis shared that the portraits reinterpret “historical figures through a contemporary lens” and capture “present-day individuals who define our lives and culture.”

Seventeen artists contributed “hand-rendered portraiture, spanning traditional realism, classical approaches, contemporary interpretations, and experimental, conceptual work” to the exhibition.

An artists’ reception will be held on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the Mansion’s “Red Carpet Gala” on Oct. 3 will feature an exclusive preview of the exhibition ahead of its public opening.

Tickets will go on sale closer to the opening date.
