NORWALK, Conn. – Whether you’re a fan of Norwalk’s growing trail system, good jazz or good government, there’s something for you happening over the next week in Norwalk.

Party time Thursday for trail lovers

All Norwalk area trail enthusiasts and anyone interested in learning more about Norwalk’s expanding trail system are invited to a free Norwalk Area Trails Spring Party from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Stepping Stones Museum in Mathews Park, 303 West Ave.

There will be complimentary drinks and appetizers, and a Cannondale bike door prize. Learn more about the 26-mile Norwalk River Valley Trail (NRVT) from Norwalk to Danbury, and the 3-mile Norwalk Harbor Loop Trail (HLT), as well as other regional and local trails and bike routes.

The event is hosted by Stepping Stones Museum, Norwalk Redevelopment Agency, NRVT, and HLT.

And all that jazz

It’s Jazz Appreciation Month, and the occasion will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 26, in the Reading Room on the main level at the Norwalk Public Library, 1 Belden Ave.

“What is Jazz?” explores from a musician’s perspective the elements of jazz and how it has evolved through time, with a presentation and performance by Norwalk saxophonist Jim Clark.

The mayor goes to Marvin

Mayor Harry Rilling will host Mayor’s Night Out from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 27, at Marvin Elementary School, 15 Calf Pasture Beach Road, in the Great Room.

Department Heads and elected officials will be in attendance. The mayor invites Norwalk residents for their comments and input on city services.

CNNA meets Monday, April 27

The monthly meeting of the Coalition of Norwalk Neighborhood Associations (CNNA) is planned for 7 p.m. Monday, April 27, in Room 101 City Hall.

CNNA members and residents are urged to attend if they are interested in hearing about and/or working on the CNNA initiative to prepare a draft municipal Public Outreach Policy that will be presented to the city officials to consider, embrace and enact. The first component of the public outreach recommendation will deal primarily with land use, zoning and development.

CNNA also is seeking volunteers to serve on standing sub-committees to monitor and report on city activities, contracts, ordinances and meetings that impact neighborhood quality of life.

There also will be information about next fall’s first CNNA Neighborhood Associations Expo and a chance to sign up to be on the ad-hoc committee.

Residents of Norwalk are always welcome, and CNNA member associations are each urged to send at least one representative to our monthly meetings.

Norwalk receives Live Green CT award; Aitoro goes platinum

Mayor Harry Rilling recently accepted an award from Live Green CT!, a 501(C)(3) organization that has created a statewide sustainability network and produces Connecticut’s largest green-living festival located in Norwalk. The city was being recognized for sharing best practices, providing municipal case studies and being a part of a statewide sustainability network that provides leadership and resources.

Norwalk has been recognized by the U.S. Conference of Mayors as one of the top 15 most livable communities, and a statewide Green Business Designation program is being launched here (see description attached below). Aitoro Appliances is the first company in Norwalk to be recognized in this new statewide program.

The family-owned business run by Tony Aitoro received the highest designation – Platinum. The program was originally created by Wilton Go Green and is now being shared with other towns and cities throughout the state by the outreach efforts of Live Green CT!

Does anyone know of a good place to take a beginner bike rider to ride. He is tired of big parking lots but not ready for roads.

Dawn, you can take the NRVT from the Aquarium north through Oyster Shell Park, where there is a .7 mile loop, although hilly is remarkably beautiful for being on an old landfill, and continue across the tracks on Crescent St to Mathews Park. Ride around Mathews Park on a great NRVT section, then cross West Ave to the section behind the old YMCA, up to Union Park. We also have the 3 mile Harbor Lop Trail but its not for beginners yet. Someday, but now its rough in patches. You can also go up to Wilton and there is an awesome new NRVT loop section starting across from Orems Diner and going up to Sharp Hill Rd. That is a stunning 4 mile round trip experience and easy riding for beginners in a wooded setting. Or ride loop around Calf Pasture Beach. OK, its parking lots also, but with awesome views!
