Fire Department, Red Cross to install free smoke detectors

The Norwalk Fire Department (NFD) and American Red Cross on Tuesday launched their partnership to install smoke detectors and provide residents with critical fire prevention and safety information.

Both the American Red Cross and Norwalk Fire Department are engaged in fire safety campaigns and have worked together for years during emergencies and helping residents recover after fires, according to a NFD press release.

Teams made up of fire department staff, public safety cadets, and Red Cross volunteers will go door-to-door from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 14, in the South Norwalk area to install new smoke detectors in homes and perform home fire safety checks. Residents also will receive fire and home safety information.  The smoke trailer will also be set up in the area to help residents how to practice escaping safely from their homes.

“Smoke detectors are not a luxury but a vital necessity,” said Fire Chief Denis McCarthy. “This partnership is an opportunity to give important safety tips, ensure that current smoke detectors are working (and have charged batteries) and install smoke detectors in homes as needed.”
