Norwalk Oyster Festival to hold 9/11 remembrance ceremony Sept. 11

NORWALK, Conn. — The Norwalk Oyster Festival will hold a remembrance ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, honoring Norwalk residents who died in the terrorist attacks 25 years ago.

The ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Park during the festival, which runs Sept. 11-13.

“We invite ticket holders to stand together in remembrance of those we lost and in gratitude for the first responders, service members, families, and neighbors forever impacted by that day,” Norwalk Seaport Association President Rick McQuaid said in a press release.

McQuaid will give remarks during the ceremony, which will include a Presentation of Colors by the Norwalk Police Honor Guard and the retirement of the colors by the Norwalk Police Color Guard.

There will also be an invocation and benediction by the Rev. Artie Kassimis of Word Alive Bible Church, a reading of the names of Norwalk victims, the National Anthem performed by Jonathan Peters and the Pledge of Allegiance led by former Mayor Harry Rilling, who was Norwalk’s police chief during 9/11.

The Norwalk Oyster Festival, now in its 48th year, is the Norwalk Seaport Association’s largest annual fundraiser, with proceeds supporting preservation and restoration of the Sheffield Island Lighthouse.

Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 5 to 12. Children 12 and younger receive free admission Sunday with a paying adult.

Entertainment is included with admission. This year’s main-stage live music performances include Lita Ford at 8 p.m. Friday, Parmalee at 8:30 p.m. Saturday and JUMP: America’s Van Halen Experience at 4 p.m. Sunday.
