Norwalk students celebrated as published authors in Silvermine Arts Center program

NORWALK, Conn. — Applause filled the South Norwalk Public Library on May 21 as 21 student artists from the Norwalk Housing Authority Learning Centers became published authors.

The celebration marked the unveiling of Autumn Light, a book created through Silvermine Arts Center’s Art Partners Outreach Education Program, which blossomed from months of creativity and collaboration.

Students, their families and friends gathered together in the evening for the book dedication ceremony. As part of the celebration, the South Norwalk Public Library formally accepted Autumn Light into its permanent collection, ensuring preservation of the collaborative work.

“This project is about much more than making art. It is about giving students the opportunity to see themselves as creators, storytellers and contributors to their community,” said Silvermine Arts Center outreach coordinator Missy Savard.

Over eight evenings at Silvermine during the fall, students watched the nature surrounding Guthrie’s Pond and translated their observations into writing and mixed-media art.

Drawing inspiration from Vincent van Gogh’s outdoor practices, students used a variety of art materials and techniques to illustrate their observations of color-changing skies and the natural environment.

Each page in the book reflects the students’ personal perspectives and artistic expressions.

A formal exhibition at the Silvermine Arts Center showcasing the original works featured in Autumn Light will remain on view through the end of July.
