NORWALK, Conn. – A rumor that Norwalk interim Superintendent of Schools James Connelly was injured in a fall on an icy City Hall sidewalk is not true, Board of Education Chairman Mike Lyons said. It was an East Avenue sidewalk, he said.
Connelly walked into Tuesday’s BoE meeting with a Band-Aid on one side of his nose and blood on the other.
“He fell on a sidewalk on an ice patch; face first into the ground,” Lyons said in an email. “Grace Vetter patched him up at City Hall. Nothing broken, so he said he didn’t need to see a doctor. We rearranged the meeting agenda he could get out and clean up. He stayed at the (Norwalk) Inn that night; Mike Barbis drove him back.”
Some people who spoke to NancyOnNorwalk said Connelly fell in the City Hall parking lot. “I think he was in front of 111 East, but definitely not City Hall. City Hall is where he got patched up,” Barbis wrote in an email.
Mayor Harry Rilling said Connelly had checked into the Norwalk Inn before the BoE meeting because he would be in town late, and decided to walk to City Hall.
“We tried to reach out to him to determine where it was that he fell but you know, during this kind of weather, it gets a little warm, and even if it doesn’t get above freezing the sun is beating on some of the snow and will melt it. Then it will refreeze at night,” Rilling said.
He said he has contacted Department of Public Works Director Hal Alvord to “find out where the super fell and look at other parts of the sidewalk around City Hall to find out what needs to be sanded or salted, whatever. We’re on top of it, but unfortunately it was dark out, there might have been black ice.”
Connelly did not return a phone call on the topic.
