NORWALK, Conn. – The city continued Sunday to honor its residents who have served in the U.S. military by adding another addendum plaque to the Veterans Wall of Honor at City Hall.
The bronze plaque includes 85 names, including Jeffrey R. DeWitt, the first Norwalker designated as having participated in the Global War on Terrorism. Also named is Civil War veteran Edwin L. Tuttle, and the city’s most recent war casualty, Spec. David Fahey, who was killed Feb. 28, 2011, while serving as an Army military policeman in Afghanistan.
Fahey’s aunt and uncle, Caroline Ettinger and Michael Standeiner, unveiled the plaque during the ceremony.
Mayor Harry W. Rilling, who served in the Navy, led the program. A news release from his office said the plaque, costing approximately $5,000, was paid for by donations from individuals and area businesses.
The release offered special thanks to members of the Veterans Memorial Committee, including its chairman, Dan Caporale, along with Karen Doyle Lyons, Charlie Williams, Jim Wrinn, David Cole and the city’s veterans liaison, Erin E. Herring.
The first Veterans Wall of Honor plaques identified city residents who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Addendum plaques included veterans from World War I, Iraq and Afghanistan.
With some 8,000 names already identified, the plaque unveiled Sunday was placed on the last wall outside the entrance to City Hall not already displaying a list of Norwalk veterans.
