Statewide Gun Buyback and Gun Safe Giveaway Day returns Oct. 3

NORWALK, Conn. — Norwalk residents can turn in guns and receive free gun safes during the sixth annual Connecticut Statewide Gun Buyback and Gun Safe Giveaway Day on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The Norwalk Police Department will host the event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1 Monroe St. Residents can voluntarily turn in unwanted and unsecured guns in exchange for gift cards. Free PIN-code gun safes and gun-safety educational materials will also be available at several participating locations.

Residents who plan to turn in a firearm should ensure it is unloaded and transported in the vehicle’s trunk or otherwise according to Norwalk Police Department instructions. Gun-safety requirements vary by location, and residents are encouraged to confirm local instructions before attending.

Sixteen Connecticut communities are expected to participate this year. According to a press release, during the first five statewide events, participating communities collected and destroyed more than 2,082 guns and distributed more than 2,371 gun safes.

The statewide initiative is organized by the Newtown Action Alliance Foundation, the Ethan Miller Song Foundation, police departments, hospitals, gun violence prevention organizations and community partners.
