Statistics don’t back up claim of dramatic drop in black student enrollment

Norwalk-BOE-022714-019
BoE Chairman Mike Lyons

NORWALK, Conn. – In a story published here Wednesday, April 1, John Mosby was quoted as saying there has been a big drop in the number of black children enrolled in Norwalk Public Schools. At Tuesday’s Mayor’s Night Out, Mosby said there used to be 5,000 black children enrolled in Norwalk Public Schools, and now there are 2,000.

“If we keep it up, the way we’re going, we’re not going to have no minority kids in the school system,” Mosby said. “What’s wrong with that? That ain’t no racist remark. It’s time for the Board to start to look at this… The way it’s going we can wind up with no minority black kids in the school system.”

NancyOnNorwalk questioned the numbers and checked with Board of Education Chairman Mike Lyons on enrollment figures. Lyons reviewed state Strategic School Systems data and found the following (see attached Student Population Changes chart at bottom):

“There were 2,232 black students in NPS in the most recent state data (as of 2013),” Lyons said. “Eleven years before that (2001-2002), there were 2,902. So there has been a drop in the black student population (from 26.2 percent of the student body to 20.2 percent), but it isn’t dramatic, and the number hasn’t been anywhere near 5,000 (probably at any time in Norwalk’s history).

“There has been a far larger drop in the number of white students than black students over that time (from 46.9 percent to 35.8 percent). The big story, of course, has been the dramatic increase in the population of Hispanic students, rising from 22.7 percent to 37.7 percent over that time.”

What? A wild claim by John Mosby that turned out to be absolutely untrue? Thank you NON for the clarification.

Should similar growth rates continue for another decade Hispanic students will form a majority in our school system. The formation of a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce similarly illustrates the ethnic transformation of Norwalk.

Once again, the Mosby family presents false claims. Will Mosby now file a lawsuit against the BOE? History says Yes!

I am more interested in what is being done to close the achievement gap. On the other blog there is a statement that G.E. capital funds were used for consultants. I would appreciate a breakdown of that. Were consultants used? What was their purpose? What company was hired and how much were they paid? Did they achieve their objectives? Did it have anything to do with minority achievement? Supposedly the funds were filtered through the NEF. Why? I would hope expenditures on consultants and what their mission was, is more important than how many Black children have moved out of Norwalk. Enough of the Mosbys!

By correcting Mosby’s logic we can now claim the following: If we keep it up, the way we’re going, we’re not going to have no white kids in the school system. What’s wrong with that? That ain’t no racist remark. It’s time for the Board to start to look at this… The way it’s going we can wind up with no white kids in the school system.

“We’re not gonna have NO minority kids”???? If that’s a direct quote – no business being on BOE. […]

Editor’s note: John Mosby is not and never was on the Board of Education. It is a direct quote. And the comment was edited to comply with our policy.

…. more of the Mosby ranting untrue statements again, again.

I’m more concerned about the drop in English speaking kids in the public school system, something that is dramatic and means they are replaced by non-English speaking kids which are more expensive to educate. That affects all taxpayers.

  10. Are you kidding?

Mr. Mosby simply needs to get the facts before making stuff up. Apparently he doesn’t care that his credibility, as well as his family members, comes into question every time they say something.
Even if it may be true!
