NORWALK, Conn. — Heavy rain and strong wind hit Norwalk this weekend, causing flooding, closing streets, and knocking out power to thousands of homes across Connecticut.
The city’s rain gauge showed 0.82 inches of rain fell on Saturday. Over the last 48 and 72 hours, the total rainfall reached 1.57 inches, meaning nearly all the rain fell within a two-day span.
The City of Norwalk closed several streets because of the storm: Water Street, Bluff Avenue, Wilson Avenue at Witch Lane, and Roton Avenue at McKinley Street. Veterans Park also closed due to flooding. By Saturday morning, the city said all streets had reopened, though Vets Park remained closed.
The Norwalk Public Library closed early on Saturday, Sept. 26, because of the weather.
As of 11 p.m. Saturday, about 21,000 customers statewide were without power, according to Southern Connecticut Weather. The outages came as wind speeds picked up as the storm intensified. Wind gusts reached 51 mph in Groton, 48 mph in Bridgeport, and 40 mph in New Haven. Inland areas saw lighter winds, though Willimantic gusted to 44 mph.
