Libraries to Kick Off Summer with Free Tie-Dye Programs

NORWALK, Conn. — With summer vacation on the horizon, Norwalk Public Library and SoNo Branch Library are kicking off the season with a splash of color—specifically, tie-dye.

SoNo Branch Library, located at 10 Washington St., will hold its all-ages “Summer Reading Kickoff: Tie-Dye Book Bags” event this Saturday, June 14, from 1 to 3 p.m., while Norwalk Public Library (NPL), located at 1 Belden Ave., will host its own Summer Reading Kickoff with a tie-dye shirt activity (for kids four and up) on Saturday, June 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. outdoors.

“We’re excited to kick off the summer with a fun and colorful celebration!” said SoNo Branch Library Manager Marcus Eason. “What better way to welcome summer than with back-to-back tie-dye programs? One week, kids can create their own tie-dye book bags, and the following week, they’ll get to design tie-dye t-shirts.”

Both programs are free. Registration is not required for NPL’s Summer Reading Kickoff on June 21. Families can register for this Saturday’s SoNo program online or just show up, according to Eason, who said his branch has enough supplies to accommodate 70 children.

“… And our priority is ensuring that all families have a joyful and memorable experience,” Eason added. “Our ultimate goal is to see smiles and happiness from everyone who attends.”

The SoNo program will take place in the second-floor meeting room of the library, where participants will be provided with both the book bags and all necessary art supplies—”so families won’t need to bring anything. Our children’s librarians will guide participants through the tie-dye process with clear, step-by-step instructions,” explained Eason.

“We do recommend that children wear older or least-favorite clothing, as tie-dye can be messy and may stain,” he added. “Once completed, the book bags will need some time to dry, but participants will be able to take them home the same day.”

Both libraries have lots of fun on tap this summer, according to Eason.

“During our kickoff event, we’ll be sharing all the exciting details about what’s coming up for our summer reading programs,” he said. “Both the South Norwalk Library and the Norwalk Library have a full lineup of events planned. Every week, there will be at least one program happening at either location, so parents, no need to worry about fitting enough events in! We’ve got plenty of fun, engaging activities for everyone to enjoy, and best of all, they’re completely free.”

At Norwalk Public Library on June 21, kids will have the opportunity to tie-dye their own summer reading shirt while also getting artistic and using chalk to decorate the library’s paths “to celebrate summer,” according to NPL’s website.

In addition, the first 20 families will receive a summer reader sign to decorate and put in their yard.

“At the library, we want summer reading to feel like a celebration of the hard work and achievements your children have accomplished during the school year,” said Eason. “These creative programs are our way of recognizing and rewarding their dedication. This summer kickoff is going to be a unique and memorable experience, and we hope to see many families join us. Most importantly, we want everyone to have fun and enjoy the celebration!”
