Crosland announces bid for ‘true nomination’ in probate judge race

Attorney Darnell Crosland, left, officially announces a run for Judge of Probate on Thursday at Paella restaurant, his mother, Uruzi Beazer of the Bronx, at his side.

NORWALK, Conn. — Attorney Darnell Crosland rallied the troops Thursday in his bid to become Norwalk/Wilton’s next Judge of Probate.

“All the mathematics say I should have gotten the nomination,” Crosland said to supporters at Paella restaurant on Main Ave., in officially announcing his campaign and a drive to win the Aug. 14 Democratic primary.

Crosland lost out to Common Council member Doug Stern (D-At Large) at the May 23 Democratic convention for probate judge, winning 19 votes to Stern’s 35. That evening, Crosland called the convention a “corrupt staged event,” slamming Democratic Town Committee Chairman Ed Camacho for appointing proxies for missing Norwalk delegates.

“That was a mistake and I think they will soon learn that that was a mistake,” Crosland said Thursday.

The pair are vying for the Democratic nomination, to face Republican former State Rep. Larry Cafero in the Nov. 7 election.

Crosland, former Norwalk Branch NAACP, spoke of his background, starting out as a juvenile probation officer before graduating college and then law school, to become a District Attorney’s officer in the Bronx.

“I know a lot about probate, I know a lot about the families that are affected,” Crosland said.

Speaking in support of Crosland was Council member Travis Simms (D-District B). Both remarked that they’ve had their differences but Simms said Crosland “has shown true resolve and leadership.”

“I think Darnell will be a great probate judge,” Simms said. “He’s fair and impartial and will do what’s right.”

Crosland said his campaign will be run “our way.”

“Some people say I am nontraditional as a person, I am going to be nontraditional as a judge,” Crosland quipped. “… They call it a primary, but I call it the nomination. You are the true delegates, you are the true leaders of Norwalk. And if you want me, forget about those people in a room a little while ago.”

City-wide Primary Elections for both major parties will be held on Tuesday, August 14th. The Democratic primary will be for the offices of Governor, Lt. Governor, Treasurer, Attorney General and Judge of Probate. There is also a primary for State Representative in District 140 (currently represented by Bruce Morris). The winners of these primaries will be the Democratic Party’s nominees for those offices and will appear on the November 6, 2018 election ballot, joining other candidates for other offices in Norwalk (and around the state) who are already nominated by virtue of being endorsed at a convention or caucus or town committee meeting, and not being challenged for the nomination. The final list of all candidates for the August primary will be released by the Secretary of the State in the next few days.

Probate Judges matter greatly to retired/elderly residents at time of great family needs. . Not clear that an attorney practicing criminal law keeping clients out of jail is the appropriate background for such a position. Be interesting to learn how many Probate Judges in CT were former criminal defense attorneys.

I do believe that Norwalk/Wilton is definitely ready to have a new young intelligent mind that leaves no stone unturned and that will be Darnell Crosland.,as your probate judge.I was there last Thursday and he is more than capable and willing to have great ideas to help the people of Norwalk/Wilton..

Maybe ringling and Barnum needs a lawyer for their clowns. That would fit him better.

    “Democrats for Larry Cafero”

The only person that is fit for the position of Probate Judge Norwalk/Wilton is Lawrence (Larry) Cafero. He has the integrity, passion, and knowhow to have this position. Larry’s distinguished career speaks for itself. He (Larry) has worked tirelessly over his long career serving the people of Norwalk and the State of Ct. Experience will win out.

Funny, Darnell wants an important position, yet he cannot even get the election dates right. He first said the elections were November 15th, then corrected himself and twice thru out his speech repeated the election being held on November 7th. When actually as Stuart pointed out election day is Tuesday November 6th, 2018

Mr. Crosland has never handled a probate matter. His speech fails to mention his qualifications for the position of probate judge because he hasn’t the faintest idea what that entails.
Probation and probate are two very different agencies that require distinct skill sets. Mr. Crosland does not possess the necessary skills.
The only people who would speak on his behalf are his mother and a friend (who used to be an enemy) and doesn’t even know which office he is running for.
Mr. Crosland simply wants a title, another feather in is his cap,for his own aggrandizement.
    Please be an informed voter!

It’s interesting to me that the regular opposition to Crosland’s candidacy is that he’s “not qualified due to a lack of experience in probate matters” but that seems intellectually dishonest since neither Cafero nor Stern have specialties in T&E.

I hope this guy wins his primary. I like how upset he seems to make the guys who thrive on the status quo.

Lawrence sold us the mall, how smart can he be , how honest can he be?

The so called mall has changed many things since it was sold to the city as a mall.

James you are correct the more it becomes obvious he riles the others may just make him the right sparring partner.
