Norwalk Will Soon Get a New Bus Network

NORWALK, Conn. — The Norwalk Transit District will be launching a new bus network on Monday, August 11, streamlining services under one network designed to improve coverage and reliability.

As part of the redesign, all current route numbers will change as the new system will combine existing separate commuter shuttles and WHEELS routes into seven all-day routes. Additionally, routes will no longer operate based on the time of day or the day of the week. Instead, there will be three routes: 1, 2, and 3 that “will run until 11 p.m. on weekdays and operate seven days a week.”

This new redesign is aimed at giving riders more “flexibility” and “providing additional local connections” in the form of expanded service during the nights and weekends, and “clearer route structure” through the operation of one network.

Burnell Blvd Hub, as well as South and East Norwalk stations, will serve as three transit hubs. At these hubs, riders can transfer to other routes and services, such as the Metro-North New Haven Line and the Coastal Link.

There will be no changes to services like ADA Paratransit, Coastal Link, and Wheels 2U. Fares will also remain the same.

This overhaul is based on the results of a two-year study: NTD Ahead, which was completed in 2024. The NTD will hold a “dress rehearsal” of the system on Sunday, August 10, in anticipation of making adjustments for launch day.

Before then, however, the NTD is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, June 26, at 6 p.m. in the Community Room of Yankee Doodle Garage located at 10 Burnell Blvd. According to the Norwalk Transit District, this is a chance for Norwalk residents to learn more about the redesign and share feedback.

For more information, residents can visit the NTD’s website, where the agency has published an overview of the new bus network and a “Find Your New Route” table. Residents are also encouraged to contact the Norwalk Transit District’s customer support team at (203) 852-000 or email them at info@norwalktransit.com.
