League of Women Voters Hosts Candidate Forum

NORWALK, Conn. — The League of Women Voters of Norwalk gathered residents and candidates Wednesday evening for a “Meet the Candidates” forum, offering voters a chance to hear directly from those seeking office in the upcoming municipal elections.

Held just days before the Sept. 9 Democratic mayoral primary, the event drew a mix of community members, activists, and candidates. Mayoral hopefuls Barbara Smyth, Darlene Young, Erik Vitaglione, and Vinny Scicchitano attended, while John Kydes was absent. Several candidates for Common Council, the Board of Education, and other local offices also took part, using the forum to introduce themselves and their platforms.

Conversations ranged from traffic congestion and overdevelopment to affordable housing and the challenges facing the city’s schools.

League leaders emphasized the importance of voter participation and highlighted new tools and opportunities available this election season. Residents were encouraged to use Vote411.org, the League’s nonpartisan voter guide, to compare candidates’ responses side by side.

Laura Smits, president of the League’s local chapter, reminded attendees that early voting is now available in Connecticut for both primaries and the general election. “Early voting is a new thing. We want people to use it. It’s been pretty popular so far,” Smits said. Early voting for the general election begins Oct. 20.

The evening also included a moment of remembrance for Common Council member Greg Burnett, who died unexpectedly last week. Speakers praised Burnett’s decades of public service and described him as a steady voice in Norwalk politics.

While the event focused on voter education, it also reflected the intensity of this year’s races. With Mayor Harry Rilling stepping aside after 12 years in office, candidates in both major parties are making their case to voters.
