NORWALK, Conn. – With just a week to go before the Aug. 12 primary election, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has endorsed five-term state Rep. Chris Perone (D-137) in his re-election bid.
Perone also has received the endorsement of United Auto Workers (UAW) Region 9A, according to a Wednesday press release from his campaign. UAW represents workers in different sectors of the economy, not just auto workers.
“UAW is proud to support a legislator with a history of supporting workers rights,” said Julie Kreshner, director of UAW Region 9A, in the release. “His work in raising the minimum wage and passing Paid Family Sick Leave has resonated deeply with working families across Connecticut.”
AFT Connecticut President Melodie Peters said in a press release the union endorsed Perone for his “long-term commitment to working families.” Chris Perone is “in an elite group of incumbent legislators” who have always worked hard on behalf of education.
“A world class education is the cornerstone of a successful future for our children,” Perone said in the release. “I have worked hard to bring back millions of dollars in state funds for education and create the innovative Norwalk Early College Academy to make sure our students have the support and resources they need. I’m honored that the AFT has once again recognized my hard work on behalf of Norwalk’s children.”
Rep. Perone has been previously endorsed by the Connecticut Education Association, the Working Families Party, AFSCME and the International Association of Machinists
Perone will face party-endorsed candidate and two-term Common Councilman David Watts (D-District A) in the primary. Watts won a narrow victory for the party backing at a May district convention.
AFT Connecticut has a membership of more than 29,000 teachers, school-related personnel including paraprofessionals, state employees, healthcare workers, and higher education faculty and staff.
