Smyth defends flyer as Scicchitano calls it divisive, unsafe

NORWALK, Conn. — The city’s 2025 mayoral race has intensified as candidates Barbara Smyth and Vinny Scicchitano traded sharp criticisms in recent letters to the editor published by NancyOnNorwalk.

Scicchitano, the Republican candidate, accused Smyth of sending a campaign mailer with “divisive messaging” that featured his image. He called the postcard “irresponsible” and said it endangered him and his family.

“As a resident, a dad, a husband, and son, placing my image in what’s being marketed as a pool of divisiveness is not only disheartening—it is incredibly unsafe for my wellbeing and my families,” Scicchitano wrote. “Norwalk deserves leadership grounded in respect, compassion, and progress—not in inciting hate.”

Smyth, the Democratic candidate, defended the flyer, saying it was intended to highlight what she described as Scicchitano’s support for President Donald Trump.

“The graphic on the mailer was meant to remind Norwalk residents of his longstanding and well-known support of Donald Trump, the most divisive, hate-inciting president our country has ever seen,” Smyth wrote. “This is not just some abstract political stance. These are real attacks on real people right here in Norwalk.”

Smyth pointed to federal policies on immigration enforcement, Medicaid, SNAP benefits, and public education, arguing that national politics have direct effects on local communities. She said she has “personally seen the shocking posts [Scicchitano] has scrubbed from his social media” and alleged he displayed pro-Trump materials in his business office.

Scicchitano pushed back, saying his focus is not on national politics but on Norwalk itself. “Just because I am a Republican does not mean I align with every national figure or agenda,” he wrote. “Leadership isn’t about party politics; it’s about people.”

The exchange underscores the growing role of national politics in local races, with both candidates framing the issue as central to leadership in Norwalk. Smyth said she will continue to stand against Trump and advocate for vulnerable communities, while Scicchitano emphasized unity and local problem-solving.

Both candidates’ full statements are available on NancyOnNorwalk’s website.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this article referred to Donald Trump as “former President Trump.” The phrasing was a slip of habit; after four years of writing it that way during President Biden’s term, it’s proven hard to break.

Vinny’s and Trump’s “unity” is BS: They think unity is everyone agreeing with them and letting them run everything.

I’m not a fan of our local Democratic machine. I didn’t like either Dem in the primary; neither of them really represents my politics.

But they’re light-years closer than whatever Vinny’s selling. He wants us to imagine that everything’s OK, that all we have to do to solve our problems is hunker down and freeze Norwalk in amber. Don’t let anyone move here; get rid of the “illegals”, don’t charge homeowners property taxes, but keep magically “creating jobs” (for WHO? where will they LIVE?), and somehow the housing crisis is just going to magically go away.

Our politics is broken by this two-party duopoly. It is morally abhorrent. Being forced to only vote for TWO parties is not a real choice; it’s just tyranny masquerading as democracy.

As Cato the Elder might have put it, “… ceterum autem, censeo ut systemam duorum partorum delendam est.”

Funny how Barbara like her puppet master Duff tries to defend the Indefensible. He didn’t try and defend his Anti Semitic post during the electric season as Barbara is not going to even try to defend her hate filled mailer. It’s shameful but it’s the old song and dance play book. Vinny has and continues to speak to the people and about the issues effecting Norwalk. And speaking about issues how come Barbara didn’t come out against extending Estrella’s ridiculous pork filled contract for another 3 freaking years. Then again where was she during the budget meetings standing up and speaking out and supporting the teachers and students. She was no where to be found! But you know who was at EVERY meeting..VINNY!!!!

This is gaslighting 101. 1) is it divisive because it highlights VS’ support of the most divisive president ever? 2) the simple fix is either denounce trump policies, or embrace them and be proud.
But Smyth pointing this out is simply giving information to those that may not know his platform.

With Trumpist policies reaching deep into Connecticut and into Norwalk, even to the snatching of our neighbors off city streets, it just doesn’t play for VS to say say his focus is on Norwalk, not national politics. In our political era, the two are inextricably intertwined. As Paul says, VS can’t dodge this. Vinnie, tell us what you are for and what you’re against.

“This is by far the most difficult budget season I have experienced, and emotions are running really high,” Smyth said.

Smyth, a retired teacher, said that if Norwalk Federation of Teachers President Mary Yordon and Norwalk Association of School Administrators (NASA) President Lynne Moore think 4% isn’t enough, then “That’s really meaningful to me.”

The above is from NON 3/2/23 article regarding BOE budget — Taxpayers and Renters should understand the budget process will be firmly in the hands of those
with an agenda of unbridled spending if and when Ms. Smyth is elected …
Maybe we need to spend more time scrutinizing the candidates over the next couple of months on local issues..IF for no other reason that understanding true positions..
