NORWALK, Conn. – When State Rep. Bruce Morris (D-140) was appointed Monday by Speaker of the House Brendan Sharkey (D-Hamden) to serve as a deputy speaker, it had a special meaning for the fifth-term legislator.
Forty years ago this week, another Morris was named deputy speaker – the first African-American to be named to the position.
“Almost to the day 40 years ago, my father, Bruce L., also was named deputy speaker, and I am deeply honored by Speaker Sharkey’s decision to make me a part of the House leadership team,” Morris said via press release.
“We will be facing unprecedented fiscal issues as well as other challenges during the legislative session and I am looking forward to doing everything I can to help Speaker Sharkey and the legislature to succeed in representing the people of Connecticut.”
Morris will be sworn into office for his fifth consecutive two-year term on Wednesday.
When the speaker of the House is absent from the chamber, the deputy speaker presides over the House of Representatives, recognizes all members wishing to speak to the chamber, puts all questions to vote and directs legislation to the proper committees. Morris is one of seven representatives sharing the post.
“As a leader within our caucus, Rep. Morris has the experience and ability to help improve the quality of life for everyone in Connecticut, while at the same time representing the interests of the families of Norwalk,” Sharkey said. “Bruce will play a key role in moving our legislative agenda forward this session.”
Constituents who want to contact the representative may call his Capitol office at (860) 240-8500 or (800) 842-8267.
