To the Editor,

As one of your likely incoming Registrar of Voters in January 2025, I strongly encourage all residents to participate in the upcoming public hearings for the Reapportionment Committee.

This committee’s work is crucial for analyzing changes to Norwalk’s voting districts, ensuring fair representation by reflecting the city’s population and demographics.

Currently, there’s an 18.86% deviation between District A (largest) and District C (smallest), which should be reduced to less than 10%.

Four options are available for public review, and it’s essential for residents to review them and attend the public hearing at the end of September. The committee’s recommendations will go to the council in October, with changes taking effect in the November 2025 election.

Now is the time to voice your opinions. Your input is key to ensuring that district changes make sense and that your neighborhood is properly represented by officials who understand your concerns.

Best,
Diana Paladino Christopher

Diana, thank you for this information. I am certain you will be replacing Brian Smith, a replacement that is looooong overdue. Where can we find this information to review without going to city hall?

Byrd and Benedict Streets are considered South Norwalk, in fact that whole neighborhood off of N. Taylor Avenue is, yet Benedict Court is in a different district. Those lines should have been drawn a long time ago. I look forward to attending the meetings and hopefully getting some of my neighbors to attend.

Wishing you all the best [in advance] on your new position, I know you will do great!

Thank you Alma for your kind words. I will take this into consideration while reviewing the maps and sharing input at the meetings. Please do not hestitate to hop on the meetings as well.
      Best, Diana

I want Option 5: Three districts of 5 members each, elected on a Single Transferrable Vote — which is basically just a way of doing Ranked Choice for a multi-member proportional district.

The current scheme of First Past The Post elections predictably gives us one-party rule and therefore is fundamentally illegitimate to the small-r/small-d principles of our democratic republic. Moreover, it is inherently zero-sum and thus corrodes the public’s political morals, undermining the logic of cooperation and compromise with a logic of winner-take-all domination.

To anyone who believes in the ideals of America, this should be utterly abhorrent, and we should not, as Thomas Jefferson once said, allow the “dead hand of the past” to bind us to something that clearly doesn’t work.

As stated in the article, the districts most affected by the planned changes are District A and District C, but other districts boundaries could also change, depending which of the alternatives is chosen.
The Reapportionment Advisory Committee’s most recent available (draft) minutes, AFAIK, are from the 8/15/24 meeting, available here https://www.norwalkct.gov/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/22843
I understand that upcoming meetings are scheduled on 9/12, 9/19, and 9/26. The 9/26 meeting is planned to be a Public Hearing.
