Letter to the Editor: Talk of the Town Includes the Outrage Over Garbage and The Cans We Use

Norwalk gave us a new mandate along with a 10% plus property tax increase. For that exorbitant increase, you get a new can, and that’s it. If you have too much for that can,  you can apply for another one, and if approved, you can pay $300 for another one.

Does this new policy, along with its disparity in barring some former garbage collection recipients from being included in the collection, benefit residents of this town?  Abjectly, no, I conclude. Most social media posts and questions out there show outrage and cite all of the “problems” to be expected due to this cost-cutting measure.

It is antithetical to give property owners an exorbitant but not complete increase in taxes at 10% + and take AWAY or reduce services that are “expected” basic services. Most residential and multi-family properties already had their own “garbage receptacles” and put them out on their garbage day, and expected they would be picked up. They did not expect to be denied service or told to stuff everything into this tiny can that was left on your doorstep, that for many not online, had no idea what to do with it. The lack of foresight and communication on this issue has created a very negative feedback ratio among residents overall.

The latest in this debacle is surrounding the new option to apply to purchase another can  for $300, if approved. First of all, that is above acceptable pricing for a can that is below standard, as many have cited. It is also completely out of touch with the town that we once knew, turned “bat-shit crazy.” I want to be a “city,” not a town, and be the second bedroom of NY, like Stamford. A trend that many of us see, and ultimately HATE, that has ultimately been shoved down our throats, reminiscent of our mothers shoving medicine in us as children, that we were forced into compliance with, but as adults, questioned.

Now, as adult property owners, we are seemingly put in the same objective narrative of forced compliance, largely as a result of the lack of representative governance resulting from “one-party rule”. Sometimes diversity of governance matters, even in such seemingly “small” instances regarding how a town or city expects one to dispose of one’s garbage.

Less does not always equal more, especially when a one-party rule expects one to comply with one garbage can to one residence and requires that you pay more, and like the lack of service that comes with it.

This type of government equals control and compliance, and that type of governance used to be labeled “communism”. Having no choice and living in a society where compliance [with] the set norm was a governing requirement is an “un-American” anti-freedom, anti-constitutional state of affairs in Connecticut and especially Norwalk, this town we call home.

If voters here continue to exist merely to comply with the latest decree, do not speak up, then surely the result will not stop at one garbage can per address, but will surely turn into NO GARBAGE ALLOWED anywhere for pick-up, among other forced compliance decrees. The more you, as a taxpayer, are willing to comply and “suck-up” to the one-party governance, the more control they will assume they have. It’s simple and it’s really apolitical, it is just the fact of the Government controlling you!

Our forefathers fought a war for our freedom, a freedom that meant that we do not  automatically comply with any governance without our voice being present in the  representative governance called “We the People”. Did folks forget about that or just  agree to not fight for it anymore?

Today it is a garbage can and a suck it up 10% tax increase to pay for big deals by politicians you don’t even like; and tomorrow it might be, leave your home because you can’t afford the property it sits on anymore; think about that. That is called tyranny! So get up and get on your phone and tell Norwalk politicians this garbage can stuff is not working. There are rats in the street, garbage dumped everywhere, and an attitude [that is] unreceptive [to] the taxes I pay to this town for this type of attitude toward my interests as a taxpayer. Better yet, consider reviewing the Republican candidates on the ballot for  Norwalk Municipal elections this November, change in leadership is good, someone speaking for you is good!

Don’t agree to be ripped off and to comply with stupidity, which is what this is, when  you know you are not stupid, but their one-party rule surely is!

I live in a neighborhood that doesn’t get garbage pick up , no sidewalks , no sewers , no street lights , and my taxes went up 13% . Thank Mr Mayor. I’m glad you are not running for reelection. And I am not a republican

    1. David Tattersall

yeah but so did the value of your house, probably by way more than 13%

It’s only worth what you can sell it for and when values crash taxes never do

Liz — And just think…..This is the first of 3 …DOUBLE DIGIT Property Tax Increases…
More pain to come…Not helping the case for affordability.

If Norwalk Republicans want to do something about one-party government, all they have to do is nominate candidates people will vote for. This is something they seem unable to do, and Liz Conti’s barely comprehensible screed surely does nothing to help the Republican cause.

Well, your prayers have been answered…We have an amazing endorsed list of candidates that will be elected in Norwalk and the 1 party rule will be a thing of the past. It all starts with VINNY FOR MAYOR!!!!!! This nightmare of trying to have our garbage picket up or even making us pay “IF APPROVED” $300 for an additional garage can is Vile and Disgusting. It is one of the first things Vinny will be addressing after he gets elected!

    lol, sure

I don’t understand the outrage over the $300 cost. The bins actually cost $82 each to the City; if you need a second bin that will double the typical cost for hauling – an extra $108 per year the City is charged. In two years, that’s $300 that the city must pay whether or not the bins are “free” to residents. If the bin last longer than 2 years, all taxpayers subsidize the hauling costs of that extra bin. These costs exist whether the bins are sold for $300 or given away, the only issue is who ultimately pays for those costs. If the “city” pays for them, then all taxpayers pay for them in a higher mill rate. Alternatively, if homeowners pay $300 to cover the added cost for their use I struggle to see how that is unfair or unjust.

My neighbors set their AC to 75 degrees. I prefer in the 60s – ice cold. Guess what, I pay a higher electric bill than my neighbor. I didn’t realize that was unfair until now.

Hard agree. The rule has always been one black trash can per household… here’s me being a bozo and following the rules all these years…

    2. Drew Todd

I guess then you can purchase the extra cans for residents. There was no rule we were only allowed to have just 1 can per household. What are households supposed to do with a large family?! And funny there hasn’t been a complaint for years and years. I honestly have no idea what idiot came up with this stupidity. So now I’ll just let my can overflow like many other Norwalk Residents and the streets will be filthy and filled with garbage. But hey you’re right if I want to keep
My house in the 60’s I pay for that while others keep it at 75. That’s called a choice! This is a City Service and the amount of money this City WASTES just like re-doing the Broad River Fields for the 5X so we can come back in another few years and re-do them again. So obviously the City loves to spend and waste money so this BS $300 will go to the dump where it belongs. And BTW, where would you like to pay me back for me $85 Can I purchased last year that was bigger and was able to hold as much as the 2 containers I used to have. The can they gave out holds 1/2. Make that make sense.

All the comments to my article are right about one thing, CHANGE is needed! To think that Vinny for the People doesn’t equate to change is just derangement syndrome probably felt with many who think voting for anyone without a D next to their name is a bad thing for Norwalk. Well, it is not! Whether it is a garbage can or a property tax bill, or a safe and viable community where your child can attend school and get a decent education and have a safe environment to grow up and thrive in, Vinny Schiccitano is not only a REPUBLICAN (not a dirty word) he is a resident of this town, who grew up here, raised children here and built and maintains a business in this town! Those who seem to think status quo under largely one party rule is just fine and dandy failing to open their eyes to how a more diverse governing body would benefit them are woefully devoid of logic and what is needed for Norwalk in the here and now!

    1. Drew Todd

      Totally Correct Liz!!!!

      1. Liz Conti

Appreciate it Drew! You have logic!

I found it curious that the town knew to drop off two cans, on the very first day, at the multifamily house on our street in a single family zoned neighborhood, when they have told me that there is no way to confirm the presence of multiple families in a single family dwelling, despite the 6-9 cars parked on the street and New York plates on the off property home owners cars when they come to check on their property & tenants.
