Letter: Norwalk Republican executive committee condemns Senator Bob Duff’s divisive social media post

Letters to the editor. Send signed letters to Nancy@NancyOnNorwalk.com with a suggested headline.

We are appalled by the recent Instagram post by State Senator Bob Duff of Norwalk and Darien, where he shared a video comparing Hitler to former President Donald Trump.

In the post, Duff wrote, “While the fascist rally starring Hitler 2.0 is ongoing at MSG, I thought this would be a good time to post this video.”

Our Response: There is no appropriate time for incendiary comparisons or divisive rhetoric. Sharing content like this is unnecessary and dismissive of those whose opinions may differ.

We live in America, a land where differing views should still allow us to remain neighbors and friends. This respect for diverse perspectives has been diminished by the current political climate. Comparing an American political figure to a monster like Hitler who was responsible for millions of deaths and known for his heinous brutality, is unwarranted and deeply disrespectful.

Leaders are meant to represent all constituents, not just those who align with their chosen candidates, and it is irresponsible to imply that those with opposing support of a candidate are supporting fascism.

In July and September, there were assassination attempts against former President Trump, underscoring the potential dangers of this type of rhetoric. Following the July 13 attack, President Biden and other leaders expressed genuine concern and good wishes to the former president, demonstrating that, even amid profound differences, Americans unite in moments of crisis.

Biden said, “There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.” Political differences should be addressed at the ballot box, not through divisive language and videos that stir resentment and memories of a time in history like no other. That many wish to forget.

Senator Duff’s casual use of a “Hitler” comparison is more than just offensive; it disrespects the experiences of those in our community whose families suffered under genocidal regimes. The comparison is insensitive and unjustified, particularly when aimed at a former president and current candidate. We urge Senator Duff to remember the weight of his words and the responsibility he bears to foster a community grounded in respect, not division. As an elected leader-he represents all.

We implore Senator Duff to retract his post and apologize to the community. Additionally, we hope the local DTC will join us in positive conversations about policy and goals for the good of Norwalk. There is no place for political violence, and we must prioritize respect and unity in our community. It can’t just be one sided, it has to work both ways. The change in climate can start here.

Respectfully,

The Norwalk Republican Executive Board

The only thing incendiary and divisive is what happened at MSG. Spare us the indignant outrage.

Today’s GOP is a blasphemy against the party of Lincoln and Reagan that I was raised with.

If republicans EVER want to win again in Norwalk, you should get off the Trump train. You can stomp your feet at Duff all you want (BTW I’m no fan of his) but your biggest problem is the MAGA movement. If you really believed what you wrote here you would have also denounced Trump calling people vermin, his endless insults of women and his blatant racism. Maybe the republicans need to dig into history a little more to understand why Trump is compared to Hitler, someone he’s admitted to trying to emulate. I’ve voted for many old school, CT republicans. Would be nice if the Republican Party could right their ship so we had real races in Norwalk. MAGA is gross and I will never understand how CT republicans went down that rabbit hole.

A typical spineless statement from a cowardly group who won’t even sign their names to this drivel.

Norwalk republicans have yet again hitched their wagon to a fascist turd, and the whole world is watching.

How will you explain you support for a convicted felon and sex offender when your granddaughters ask what the hell you were thinking?

I am a Sunday school teacher, small businessman and a volunteer soccer coach. The republicans call us “enemies of the state”. They call us degenerates. They call us vermin. They say we are poisoning the blood of our country. They threaten to use the United States military against us, even though our children volunteer and serve while his are as cowardly as their twice impeached, disgraced, criminal father. This is Nazi rhetoric through and through. In fact, trump frequently quotes hitler and expresses admiration for his trailer trash, Nazi supporters.

Keep your asinine observations to yourself.

An attempt by area Republicans to reinvent reality deserves comment. In historian Heather Cox Richardson’s blog yesterday, she sets the record straight by describing Trump’s Nazi rally as follows: ” Republican presidential nominee former president Donald Trump offered Americans his closing argument in the 2024 presidential race on Sunday, October 27, at Madison Square Garden. At a rally that evoked a Nazi rally at the old Madison Square Garden on February 20, 1939, Trump’s warm-up acts set the terms of Trump’s final pitch to voters by calling Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean” and railing against “f*cking illegals.” They called Vice President Kamala Harris “the Antichrist” and “the devil,” and called former secretary of state Hillary Clinton “a sick son of a b*tch.” When Trump took the stage about two hours late, he echoed the warm-up acts, and then reiterated that he believes fellow Americans are “the enemy within.”

When Trump, who acts like a psychopath, says, he’s “not a Nazi,” we’re reminded that he has never apologized for felonious acts much less the violent rhetoric and dictatorship he asks voters to embrace.

    Seriously?

“…it is irresponsible to imply that those with opposing support of a candidate are supporting fascism.”

Is this the same Republican committee that gave us Daniel Miressi two years ago? Where was this pearl clutching when he called local leaders (at campaign events!) everything from Marxists to murderers?

The Republican nominee for President is king of “incendiary comparisons or divisive rhetoric”, mayhap you save a little faux outrage for him.

Clean up the mess in your own house before you go around demanding apologies from anybody. The audacity is laughable.

Let me start by saying I am an independent. I find that all of the comments made by Bob are offensive. He claims to be so socially and politically correct yet he posts rhetoric synonymous with a one way street everyday online. I also find a good majority of what Donald Trump says to be off the wall offensive as well. That being said, it doesn’t make it acceptable for a state senator who is on our payroll to go down that road to a place where so many people were murdered for no reason. If you break it down then Bob and Donald act exactly the same way. Bob is no angel himself. He represents Norwalk and Darien not the whole state of CT or even Fairfield County for that matter. Take a look at his financials because it is public knowledge. He just posted a picture yesterday of him with Mayor Ganim. He actually did years in jail but Bob preaches how Trump is a cheat, womanizer, etc… The problem in Norwalk is the overwhelming majority is Democrats. Majority of them just vote down the line. Last election we elected a convicted felon who did time in jail recently for shooting someone. I mean cmon. Even Harry used to be on the republican side until he decided to run against his good friend Mayor Moccia as a democrat. Point here is that the language Bob used is offensive. Many Jewish people live in his district and didnt appreciate it. I feel that his behavior is unacceptable and I let go of him as a client from my business after 10 years because i saw a small glimpse of what he does and how he does it. He feels like it is justified because Trump acts like a dope as well. It’s not! Is this the type of video we should show kids in elementary school when teaching about the government?

Glad to read Dems have received their talking points memo…

In the meantime, what’s Duff done about Electricity Prices/Policies. — That’s what I find Pathetic

Today, former Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed Kamala Harris.

We all know Schwarzenegger. He has a fascinating life story. He knows NAZIS. His father was one. Not just a “They made me sign up” NAZI, but a real enthusiastic NAZI who fought for the Third Reich across Europe from Russia to Poland and France during WW2.

When our violence-loving Donald Trump orchestrated the January 6th attack on our US Capitol, Schwarzenegger likened it to the Kristallnacht in Nazi Germany.

Many Americans don’t know what that is. But Schwarzenegger does. Schwarzenegger knows NAZIS. Those who know how the NAZIS acquired power regularly speak out against Trump because they know the parallels are undebatable. There are lots and lots of people who have made easy comparisons between Trump’s clearly anti-democratic actions and words and past fascist dictators. Some are here in the US, many are from around the world who know the history of fascism being elected into power all too well.

The unnamed Norwalk Republican Executive Board members probably think they had a moment to be “the loyal opposition” to Senator Duff and call him out for such language. But those of us know our history know Senator Duff is exactly correct, and should be thanked for speaking out against anti-democratic forces.

When did politics become so ugly? I remember when we used to joke about our differences. It was normal and acceptable to disagree. Not now. For those who are offended that the RTC letter had no signatures, simply go to their town website. The members of the Executive Committee are all listed, with photos, hiding in plain sight.

The RTC press release was appropriate and should have been expected. Trump is not just the party presidential candidate but a highly popular one. Bob Duff’s video was highly offensive, disrespectful and served no purpose other than to incite hate. Mudslinging has become the norm in politics. Comparing the tone of the RTC press release against the comments by Duff supporters, it is clear who is slinging the most mud.

On a positive note, there is a Republican candidate running against Bob Duff in the upcoming election. His name is Martin Tagliaferro. I attended the debate in Darien. Although, I am a registered Republican, I am not always impressed with Republican candidates. In this case I am. I like what Martin Tagliaferro stands for: common sense, a reasonable and rational demeanor, the desire and experience for problem solving, solid values and ethics and an open-minded approach. Most voters agree that term limits are desperately needed. If we the people keep the door revolving, we are less likely to be burdened with elected officials who lose sight of their obligations to their constituents and become far too obsessed with their political careers. It seems to be a good time for a change.

Norwalk GOP, Bob Duff has every right to post his opinion. Have you heard of the 1st Amendment? You should be more afraid of what your candidate Trump and his minions will do to us all if anyone disagrees with him.

So sad that so many local and state GOP members are publicly silent about your Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates’ outrageous and nasty comments.

    SILENCE=APPROVAL

Sadly, we’ve gotten to the point where many in the electorate are not thinking rationally.

    Here’s my take:
    Trump’s comments are horrible.
    Biden’s comments are horrible
    Harris’s comments are horrible
    Duff”s comments are horrible

In my opinion, if you don’t think all the above is true you need to reevaluate how you think
There are no excuses for any of these statements – by ANY of these candidates or their surrogates

  12. Tysen Canevari

You are right John. However, Please clarify Diane what President Trump is going to do to me? LOL. I love that line.. Did he do anything to me 4 years ago? Sure Bob has his right to say things like any other American. The point is that he SAID it all! By the way, did you notice no endorsement for Bob from police and fire this year? Speaks for itself.

  13. stephen balazs

6 years ago larry cafero called out the republican party. sadly, too many in the party don’t heed the words of Arnold’s “i am an American first and a Republican after that”. when’s the last time a republican candidate for president failed to get the endorsement of any prior presidents or vice presidents? when the guys ex chief of staff and joint chiefs describe him as a fascist? who’s the candidate for president called for the public execution of a a House member because she committed the ultimate apostasy and dared to call him out? i WISH we had a sane 2nd party in Norwalk – back in the days when we had alternating parties winning elections, but as long as the see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, cabal of republicans in leadership continue , there is no responsible or reasonable alternative major party other than the democrats .

    1. John O’Neill

Stephen: While I agree with most of your points above you didn’t address the article? Was Duff right to equate Trump to Hitler?
As a history teacher (I think) you certainly know the pain Hitler caused millions of Jews for generations.
For the life of me, I don’t understand why Duff’s apologists have always given him a free pass. Whether it’s this case
or the Great Lie about the Norwalk Police at the height of the George Floyd tensions. I have never seen Dems call him
out. Quite honestly, I find that dangerous.
While I’m here I’d like to remind Norwalkers about our Electric Bills this summer. I hope they remember those bills as they
      head to the polls Tuesday.

      1. stephen balazs

DJT’s rhetoric sounds a lot like Hitler’s speeches and writing before rising to power in 1933. Both denigrated minorities and cast minorities as sub or non-human. Does that mean or ex-President will do the same things as Hitler did should he rise to power again- I hope not- but if I was a person of Haitian ethnicity or a host of others- I’d be worried. If I was Lynn Cheney, Adam Schiff, Gen. Milley, Mike Pence, John Kelly and a host of others- I’d be worried. We’ve only had one President in our history who tried to instigate a coup to stay in power— Geez the guy even said he wanted generals akin to Hitler’s, though not knowing that Hitler’s generals tried to kill him. Watch Arnold’s video and then tell me if Duff was so far off base- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_P-0I6sAck

        1. John O’Neill

Stephen: Thank you for both responding and proving my point. There were approximately 6 million Jews and 5 million others slaughtered by Hitler’s regime in Europe during his reign . Trump, while miles from perfect, recognized Jerusalem of Israel’s capital. Last time I checked his less than perfect son-in-law is Jewish. Any comparison to the Nazi party and Trump is surely a slanted view that happens to be a political opportunity to win an election. Trump spent four years in the Whitehouse — How many millions of “enemies” perished in that time frame?
Any rationale to compare Trump to Hitler is shocking for anyone who understands anything about Central Europe in the 30s. My close friend’s parents were part of KinderTransport, so please don’t lecture me or my friends about Hitler or the Nazi party. Maybe teach your students about that history and ask them whether Trump compares to Hitler.
Holy Cow — Maybe the Norwalk Cops were guilty of spitting as well.

          1. John C. Miller Jr.

@John O’Neill: Not only has Stephen overlooked the fact that Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital; ignored Trumps implementation of the Abraham Accords to bring stability between Israel and the Arab Nations in the Middle East; or the fact that Trump has a son-in-law, daughter and grandchildren who are Orthodox Jews, he seems to have overlooked the history of the Democrat Party as the party of the Confederacy, the Ku Klux Klan, Jim Crow Laws, slavery and segregation; seems to have overlooked the fact that Woodrow Wilson re-segregated the military and the federal government and was an advocate for eugenics to purify the races; he also seems to have overlooked the fact that when FDR established the Federal Housing Administration in 1934 to insure mortgages and promote homeownership, the maps created to designate where it was safe to insure mortgages included areas shaded in red that were mostly African American neighborhoods that were considered too risky to insure, which is where term “red lining” originated. He also must have overlooked the fact that the second longest Senate Filibuster in history was conducted by one of Joe Biden’s mentors, Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) in opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. History does have a way to contradict partisan rhetoric.

Stephen, Thats a very broad statement you make. I am an independent because i like to vote for the best person for the job. I am not swayed by what party your are. I want to know what you are all about. It seems this country has equated peoples worth depending on what party they follow. Trump doesnt necessarily represent the people on the republican side 100 percent. People might like some of his policies versus Kamala’s. The same holds true vice versa. When you get Bob Duff suggesting people are nazi’s because they are at a rally that is such a low class statement. Bob Duff took a picture with Mayor Ganim the other day. Bob said Trump is a loser because he has been prosecuted for doing wrong things. Ganim did time in jail for being a crook. Point is each person is their own person and people should do a little homework and vote for the best person. Too put out ads saying only vote democrat or republican to me is just ludicrous. Its the one duty i feel we all have is to vote so at least know what and who is on the ballot!

  15. Jessica Garnett

The mental gymnastics required to defend Trump are truly mind boggling. This is why you will continue to see republican losses in 2024 in CT.

  16. Bryan Meek

I would call Trump a fascist if he did anything nearly remote to the citizenry as team Duff actually did during Covid.

Duff and team closed our churches and schools but kept liquor stores and casinos open.

Duff was a proponent for denying medical care to anyone who didn’t take the experimental vaccines.

Duff was behind firing people from their jobs if they didn’t take the vaccine regardless of whether or not they were remote workers.

Democrat governors that Bob supports forced nursing homes to take covid infected hospital discharges. Some of these governors have been found to taking hefty campaign contributions from the same hospitals and nursing homes. One of these governors (NY) actually passed legislation indemnifying his campaign donors and is responsible for the deaths of 1000s of elderly when he had been provided quarrantine ships to locate infected people. Instead he forced them into the nursing homes to spread the disease. At least this is what the investigation has turned up so far. Lamont did the same thing. It would be interesting to see if he was getting the same kind of donations.

I hope Trump’s Jewish daughter, son-in-law, and three grand kids, know that grandpa is Hitler. Otherwise, could be very awkward bar mitzvahs.
