On Nancy: A new era for Norwalk’s premier hyperlocal news source

Nancy with the 2018 First Amendment Award from the CT Society of Professional Journalists

After more than a decade of serving the community, NancyOnNorwalk’s Founding Editor Nancy Chapman will transition into a new role at Norwalk’s premier hyperlocal news source. In honor of her outstanding reporting and long-time service to Norwalk, the Board of Directors has appointed her Editor Emerita.

She may have a new title, but we’re not letting her off the hook just yet. Nancy will continue to consult with the Board and staff members to ensure a smooth transition. In addition, we recently turned the tables on her by assigning Malik Brizan-Reed to interview Nancy as the capstone to his summer internship. As you listen to it, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating Nancy’s remarkable career, her countless contributions to Norwalk, and her considerable wit and wisdom. (Nancy is sure to roll her eyes at that last part – but it’s true!)

Listen to the story of Nancy Chapman’s journey in an interview conducted by Malik Brizan-Reed, NoN’s summer intern.

It may feel strange to hear that Nancy is stepping back from the site that bears her name. Transitions can be unsettling, even when they have been anticipated. Long-time readers and supporters know that Nancy has been a tireless reporter, writer and photographer, delivering must-read stories on Norwalk almost daily since 2012. Even with regular contributors and editors providing support, the production schedule often was grueling.

Nancy’s intention was always to create a Norwalk-focused digital news publication that endured, made a difference, and that she and her co-founder and husband Mark Chapman could take pride in. It’s that vision that saw the transition of NancyOnNorwalk 10 years ago into a registered, non-profit organization overseen by an independent, volunteer board of directors. This year, as Nancy battled cancer, both new and veteran contributors have stepped up to keep the local news coming, alongside members of the Board.

As Norwalk news enters a new era, we encourage anyone who shares our passion for independent journalism to consider helping us shape the future. Options include:

• Joining the Staff:  NoN is currently searching for a full-time managing editor, as well as other editorial roles. If you have experience as a reporter, writer, editor, photographer or multi-media journalist, we’d love to talk with you about potentially joining the team. Email us jobs@nancyonnorwalk.com.

• Applying for a role on the Board of Directors. We’re looking for people from all walks of life who love Norwalk and believe in the value of hyperlocal news. Email info@nancyonnorwalk.com for more information about joining the NoN Board.

• Contributing Content: Keep sending your press releases, opinion pieces and letters for publication. Email news@nancyonnorwalk.com.

As always, thank you for your support of hyperlocal news for Norwalk.

Nancy has been a treasure to Norwalk. She turned career and personal adversity into a brilliant light that shined in the dark places of Norwalk. I commend the people who stepped up to help NON in her time of need, as her health battles emerged and continued. She is truly irreplaceable. That spirit her son described, of fighting even harder if you fought her, rings true, knowing her fight against powers-that-be, and now her fight against cancer. I’m so sorry she is going through it! Nancy, thank you for being that bright light and shining it for the citizenry: as you know, democracy cannot thrive without the light shined by true journalists like you.

Thanks for all the years of hard work, Nancy! It must have been extremely difficult given the death of traditional media. And I can’t say I’ve always agreed with your editorial decisions — I think you gave too much credence to tired NIMBY tropes that have done nothing to rebuild the bustling traditional downtown they purport to want to preserve.

But under all that conflict and disagreement, the plain truth is that local media’s decline has been both a symptom and a driver of the decline of our democracy and our city. Someone was needed to keep the lights on, and you’ve done that admirably.

Thank you Nancy for your work the past several years. Quite amazing that you and your husband came here not that long ago and had such a transformative impact on the public discourse. At a time when investigative journalism has largely been on decline you gave it a shot in the arm and even The Hour is stronger now because they know they have to compete with NON. Thank you too to all the people on the Board.

Thank you so very much for the amazing service you provided to all of us here in Norwalk. Ever since my family and I moved here 14 years ago, you have been an incredible Source of information on the guiding light during the pandemic. Hoping you have an amazing retirement. You guys need more women on your board. 😃

Dearest Nancy, I don’t even know where to start in thanking you for your stellar service to Norwalk. You came up with the concept of NoN, brought that concept to reality, and have built a team to make it continue to thrive. We have a real treasure that keeps our community informed and engaged. People who don’t live in Norwalk have no idea what they’re missing out on by not having a hyperlocal news outlet like NoN.
Wishing you all the best in your new Emerita role.

Nancy – much respect. I’ve always wanted to be a journalist, and never will be. It’s not easy work. The value is delivered to your audience and little to yourself. You’ve kept hyperlocal relevant which is something to be proud of. You have made an impact on journalism in Norwalk and should be a model for the news we want to read.
