NORWALK, Conn. — With September being National Preparedness Month, Norwalk Emergency Management and the Greater Norwalk Chamber of Commerce will present a Hurricane Preparedness event at Fire Department headquarters, 121 Connecticut Ave., this Thursday, Sept. 18, from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
“We want to make businesses aware of resources that are available to them through the city and their different offerings,” said Greater Norwalk Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Shannon O’Toole Giandurco.
While the event is geared toward providing resources for businesses in the event of a hurricane, O’Toole Giandurco said anyone is welcome to attend.
According to the chamber’s website, topics covered will include creating an emergency plan, building an emergency kit, understanding local risks, protecting your property, staying informed, and post-storm safety.
Michele DeLuca, deputy director of Emergency Management, will be on hand at this Thursday’s event.
“The welcome and presentation will be relatively brief so people have a chance to network and get resources,” said DeLuca.
DeLuca also plans on spreading the word about preparedness at another local event later this month.
“At our large fire, police, DPW open house and Touch-a-Truck event on Sept. 27, I’ll have preparedness resources for families and individuals,” she said. “Throughout the year, I always have safety information in City Hall next to customer service. There’s also a spotlight on the city’s website [norwalkct.gov] for National Preparedness Month.”
The Greater Norwalk Chamber of Commerce will hold another free event in early October to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“That is going to be held Oct. 8 at City Hall, and it’s a partnership with the chamber, the City of Norwalk, and the Domestic Violence Crisis Center, and they offer a training program for employers to help identify … signs of domestic abuse in the workplace and things to be aware of,” said O’Toole Giandurco.
After that part of the Oct. 8 program, which will run from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in the City of Norwalk’s Community Room, located at 125 East Ave., the mayor will sign a proclamation at 10 a.m. declaring October Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“I am really trying to offer something each month that’s free for the community but ties into our mission,” O’Toole Giandurco added of the upcoming programs.
While both the Sept. 18 and Oct. 8 events are free, O’Toole Giandurco said that the chamber asks folks who plan on attending to register at greaternorwalkchamber.com, so organizers have an idea of how many people will be at each program.
Both events will feature “light bite” breakfast items, according to O’Toole Giandurco.
